The Dominican Republic culture is as distinctive as any other. This beautiful island’s history dates well back into the 1400’s and beyond. Puerto Plata, northwestern Dominican Republic lies at the foot of Isabel de Torres Peak, along the Atlantic Ocean. Puerto Plata (meaning “Silver Port” in Spanish) was founded in 1503 by Christopher Columbus. Serving the fertile Cibao Valley, the port handles the produce of one of the country’s leading coffee-growing regions . Al in all it offers historical literature and sites with endless possibilities and bounty delights.

We encourage you to take part in our Cultural learning programs to benefit the most of your stay here with us.

Amber Museum
An outstanding example of Victorian architecture, the museum houses a unique collection of valuable Dominican amber.  Experts say this amber is known to be the most transparent in the world. Amber is classified as semiprecious and is actually tree sap that has hardened for millions of years, capturing many fossils of plant and insect life.

We may be able to offer competitive group rates Allow 1-2 hours.

Fort San Felipe

Attraction type: Historic site Puerto Plata Puerto Plata was founded by Nicol?s de Ovando in 1502. A personal decree of Christopher Columbus gave the city its name, because of the shimmering silver color of its coast at sunset. Puerto Plata is cradled between its colonial harbor and a dramatic backdrop and natural reserve, Mt. Isabel de Torres. Still erect from centuries past is the colonial fortress of San Felipe, built in 1541 to defend from possible pirate attack.

Many of the turn-of-the-century homes have been lovingly restored, and the charming central park gazebo was recreated from period renderings of the original. The 1970's brought tourism to the Amber Coast, with a meticulous development program directed by the Central Bank's Department of Tourism Infrastructure.
